Blaming their brains
What's going on in our schools?
As a clinical psychologist, I hear a lot about what happens in school and how it impacts young people. What I don’t do so much is actually visit schools and work within them. That’s because the job of a clinical psychologist is seen as health, not education.
Educational psychologists are different. They are usually trained teachers before they become educational psychologists, and so they have an in-depth understanding of the way that schools function, and what that does to the young people within them. Dr Chris Bagley is one who has reflected deeply on this experience, and he told us about it in the first episode of Season 2 of our podcast, Let’s Talk Neurosense.
This interview is a window into how school treats young people, particularly those who struggle or who cannot meet expectations. It’s an episode that everyone who cares about our young people and education should hear.
