Part of being a parent is watching your children step out into the world. You’re always trying to help them step towards independence, whilst keeping them safe enough. You’re balancing challenge and safety. You’re helping your child to expand their comfort zone, whilst also making sure that they aren’t overwhelmed and frightened.
This can be particularly challenging if your child has a learning disability. They may do things at a different pace to other children, and you might always be second guessing yourself – are they ready to do this? Should I be pushing a bit more, or stepping back? They might react very strongly to new things, leaving you unsure as to whether to keep trying or just stick to the familiar
.
Many of you have got in touch about my webinars. You say that when your child has learning disabilities, it can be hard to find information. Most parenting resources assume that they will be able to do certain things which they aren’t able to do, like explaining how they feel, or understanding explanations. You say that a lot of what is available to you is based on behaviourism – rewards and punishments, and that this isn’t what you want.
For that reason, I have written a new webinar for parents of children with learning disabilities. It’s about anxiety – how to recognise if your child might be anxious, and what to do about if it if they are. It is suitable for all parents of children with learning disabilities or global developmental delay. It does not take a behavioural approach, but will help you to understand how anxiety works in children and what you can do to help your child be less anxious and thrive.
Helping Your Child with Learning Disabilities with Anxiety. Yes it’s recorded. June 13th at lunch time. Please share if you know parents who might benefit.
